Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to present Spirit Keepers: Walter C Jackson, Marie Johnson-Calloway, and David MacDonald, an exhibition of three artists working in the Black radical tradition. The exhibition serves as a significant reintroduction in New York City of these artists, showcasing work from the 1970s-90s, a time when each of the artists responded to civil rights activism. They are united in their explorations of family history, African American experience, African heritage, and experimental combinations of materials.

Across the Pond: Contemporary Painting in London is a group exhibition of 11 UK-based artists, curated by Emma Fineman in collaboration with Eric Firestone Gallery. The work on view is linked by an interest in unearthing and re-investigating histories, visually realized through painting processes involving scraping back, unveiling, and layering.

Alright Alright Alright is an exhibition reflecting themes of eternal optimism in a complex world with exuberant combinations of color, pattern, geometry and a host of materials, including ceramic, painting, textile, glass, and found wood.

Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to announce RAW: a wide-ranging group exhibition of 17 contemporary, inter-generational and multinational artists. The exhibition addresses the theme of rawness in an expansive manner.

The Garage is the gallery’s sweeping 7,000 square-foot warehouse space at 62 Newtown Lane. The curation will rotate through the summer, with a “salon” installation combining historic material represented by the gallery, and younger generations of contemporary artists.

The two artists look to origins and sources that run counter to the zeitgeist, art world trends, and their own preconceptions.

Eric Firestone Gallery is delighted to announce "Sally Cook: Where Fantasy Has Bloomed, Painting and Poetry since the 1960s." Opening on May 20, 2023, this is the Buffalo-based artist’s first solo presentation in New York City since 1963. The exhibition spans the prolific career of the 91-year-old painter: from her Abstract Expressionist canvases conceived when Cook was immersed in Manhattan’s postwar art scene; to her geometric abstractions laden with symbols; to her figuration that resonates with the dreamy tableaux of Florine Stettheimer and the magic realism of Frida Kahlo. Cook’s fantastical approach to abstraction, portraiture, still life, and poetry—which she has been writing since the 1980s—reflects her observations of the world. Whether with a paintbrush or a pen, Cook captures the absurdity and whimsy of ordinary life. "Sally Cook: Where Fantasy Has Bloomed, Painting and Poetry since the 1960s" is curated by Julie Reiter Greene with support from Robert Scalise, Director, University at Buffalo Art Galleries. This exhibition revisits and expands on "Sally Cook: 1960–Present," which the University of Buffalo Art Galleries mounted in 2020 yet displayed virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eric Firestone Gallery presents paintings on loan from the University of Buffalo Art Galleries and the Burchfield Penney Art Center as well as examples from the artist’s collection and important Buffalo-area collectors.

That ‘70s Show is a joint project in which 21 New York galleries will present one or two artists who made work during the 1970s. Several New York galleries are invested in scholarship and re-examining artists who were active during the 1970s. We are a community in New York and we pay attention to one another. In this spirit, Eric Firestone Gallery pays tribute to this joint endeavor: celebrating one another, creating dialogue, and organizing something alternative to the fairs during Frieze New York Week. Eric Firestone Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition Miriam Schapiro: The André Emmerich Years, Paintings from 1957–76. Miriam Schapiro (1923–2015) is now well-known as a pioneer of the Women’s Art Movement, and for her contribution to the Pattern and Decoration Movement. She fused craft work, traditionally made by women, with modern painting in collages termed “femmage.” However, this exhibition will additionally shed light on her early Abstract Expressionist canvases, and her pioneering approach utilizing computer technology to create Hard Edge geometric painting in the 1960s. Spotlighting the legacy of this feminist artist, the exhibition will explore three stylistic phases, with significant examples from these two decades of Schapiro’s career.
